 News Update!

We have been awarded our second Green Flag

Eco-Schools Scotland

On Thursday 6th October 2011 the school was visited by an assessor, Lesley Weston, from ECO schools Scotland.

The ECO committee gave a review presentation at an assembly showing all the work that has been carried out in the school over the last two years.

Ms Weston then met with the ECO committee to learn about how they help inform the school and organise activities.

The committee then guided Ms Weston on a tour of the school grounds pointing out all the improvements. The House Captains then took Ms Weston round classes to show her some of the work that has been going on this term.

Ms Weston was very pleased with the progress made and has awarded the school the ECO Green flag, the best award.

Thank you to all the parents and friends of the school for your support.

We have the Green Flag!

School Grounds

Funded by grants from ‘Fairer Scotland’ and ‘RBS Supergrounds’ the playground has been transformed.

New sitting areas have developed for picnics, board games and social meeting places. Active play is encouraged by a traversing wall, tyre hopscotch, goal and ball targets. Garden areas have appeared with flowers, fruit trees and bushes, other edible plants and a haven for wildlife. Wall murals designed by pupils now add interest and colour to many parts of the grounds.

Some of the work was undertaken by parent helpers, RBS staff and school staff on two Action days last summer.

Waste minimisation

‘Reduce, reuse and recycling’ has been a focus in the school. Bins for paper, garden waste, plastic bottles, drinks cans and compost are in use. Further recycling is encouraged with Rag Bag collections, battery collection, ink cartridge and mobile phone recycling and Yellow pages recycling with the ‘Kirk’ scheme.

The Dundee Council Waste aware team promoted waste free packed lunches by highlighting the amount of packaging rubbish collected each day.

Litter

The whole school has been involved in trying to keep our school grounds and litter free zone. Litter picks have been carried out at frequent intervals on the pavements and in the school grounds. Many thanks to all our helpers.

We are now ready to apply for the Green Flag.
